Ember Thoughts
To Hold the Sun
Upon the shore where evening spills
Her golden wine on wave and sand,
We stand as children of the earth,
With open heart and lifted hand.
The sun descends, yet does not die;
It only bows beyond our sight,
And leaves upon the trembling sea
A path of amber, rose, and light.
O let us bless each tender day
That Heaven grants our mortal breath;
For beauty blooms in passing hours,
And love grows dear because of death.
The ocean speaks in ancient tongues,
The wind has kissed a thousand years;
The sand remembers every foot,
Each laugh, each longing, and each tear.
How rich the world, how vast the grace,
Of forest, river, sky, and stone;
These natural treasures, freely given,
Were never meant for one alone.
So let us share the bread, the flame,
The gentle word, the patient hand;
For kindness is the noblest art
A human soul may understand.
To be human is to wonder,
To fall, to rise, to still believe;
To gather light from fading skies,
And give more than we receive.
And if two hands should frame the sun,
Or one lone dancer greet the tide,
Let it remind our weary hearts:
All life is holy, deep, and wide.
Embrace the day before it fades,
The sea, the sky, the breath, the friend;
For every sunset softly says:
Love well, be kind, before the end.
